Isolines, or contour lines, are used to represent a third dimension in maps. An isoline map, like shown above, uses these lines, sometimes paired with elevation numbers (otherwise using a constant interval), to show the elevation. The small circle inside the many other circles shows that that is the highest point. Each inside circle adds another elevation level higher. When the lines are close together, there is a big elevation change over a small distance. When the lines are spaced apart further, there is a small, gradual change in elevation over a longer distance.
